Toronto-based duo Partners in Crime—Colin Whiteford and Doug Pegg—have been crafting melodic, harmony-rich pop-rock since their teenage years. Meeting in grade school and forming their first band in high school, the pair developed a sound inspired by their musical heroes: the tight harmonies of the Beach Boys, the timeless hooks of The Beatles, and the drive of classic British rock. By the early 1980s, Whiteford and Pegg were recording at Toronto’s Kinck Sound Studios with engineer/producer Fred Kinck Petersen, whose sharp ear and collaborative style became central to their early work. They went on to become one of the first acts of the 1990s to perform on MuchMusic’s Electric Circus, eventually landing a distribution deal with A&M Records for their release Abnormal Psychotic Behaviour, which earned national radio play and later attracted hundreds of thousands of online views. Their music also found its way into sports arenas, with tracks played in MLB and NHL stadiums. Their 2024 single “Randy Girls” began life decades earlier, recorded when the duo were in their early 20s and later thought lost. Rediscovered on a cassette and restored, it was reimagined with fresh mixing by Doug McClement and mastering by Noah Mintz, co-produced by Petersen and Terry Gadsden. A buoyant mix of power-pop, vintage rock, and brass flourishes, the song captures the thrill of summer vacations and the joy of meeting new people. Its re-release has gained international airplay across Canada, the U.K., Brazil, Mexico, and France.

Pengame Classic is a Michigan-born lyricist, producer, and visionary bridging the Golden Era of hip-hop with the modern age of consciousness. Raised in Muskegon, Michigan, and spending part of his early childhood in Berlin, Germany, he was exposed to diverse cultures early on — shaping a broad worldview that continues to influence his music, message, and creative direction. Known for his razor-sharp lyricism, soulful substance, and philosophical edge, Pengame Classic defines his sound as “High Vibrational Hip-Hop.” His creative imprint, Category Otha, stands for artistic integrity, elevated thinking, and timeless authenticity. Featured in The Source Magazine, Pengame Classic earned national recognition for his contributions to independent artistry and his mission to preserve lyricism, originality, and the authentic spirit of hip-hop. His song “Gerald” was featured at the beginning of the 2022 motion picture Gerald’s Hands, marking his music’s crossover into film and expanding his creative range beyond the studio. In January 2022, Pengame Classic appeared live on Video Music Box in Manhattan, NYC, representing authentic hip-hop on one of the culture’s most legendary television platforms. His performance connected his artistry directly to the legacy of hip-hop’s pioneers and cultural gatekeepers. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pengame Classic personally organized and hosted a charity basketball game for youth, followed later that night by a community concert at The Manhattan. The dual-event experience — one for the kids, one for the adults — provided a full day of unity and entertainment when most public gatherings were nonexistent. The success of both events reflected his leadership, creativity, and dedication to giving his city a sense of hope and togetherness through music and culture. A respected performer, Pengame Classic has shared stages with Big Syke (2Pac affiliate), DJ Quik, Kurupt, Blahzay Blahzay, and The Furious 5, earning respect from legends like Kool Rock Ski (The Fat Boys) and DJ Grandmaster Dee (Whodini). His collaborations include elite lyricists such as Skyzoo, City The Great, Koncept Jackson, and fellow Michigan native Willie The Kid. He has also made multiple appearances and song premieres on San Francisco’s KPOO 89.5 FM, including as a featured guest on Rap Snacks Radio’s “You Can’t Do That on Radio” (Episode 339) in 2024, further amplifying his voice within the independent and underground hip-hop community. His acclaimed discography — including Graffiti Rapp, Casso’s Theme, Melo Aphrodite, Wassily’s Chromasoul, and Nostalgia — showcases his mastery of lyricism, storytelling, and musical structure. His work has been featured by Insomniac Magazine, Boom Bap Nation, and various local press outlets, with front-page coverage celebrating his cultural and artistic impact. Through every verse, performance, and community initiative, Pengame Classic embodies the balance of skill, soul, and science — proving that real artistry doesn’t fade; it evolves.
US indie-folk pair Penny & Sparrow are ringing in the new year on a high note as they gear up to unveil their latest album, Lefty on January 31, 2025 via I Love You / Thirty Tigers.
The duo, composed of Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke, has produced an extensive discography over the last decade, capturing the attention of publications like NPR Music, Wonderland Magazine, Atwood Magazine, Beats Per Minute, Under The Radar Magazine and Indie Music Review, among others. They've opened for the likes of Josh Ritter, The Shouting Matches (a side project by Bon Iver's frontman, Justin Vernon), The Wood Brothers, Drew Holcomb and Johnnyswim.
Additionally, Penny & Sparrow have showcased their soundscape throughout the USA including California, Washington and New Jersey, while they've performed at the Ryman in Nashville, Tennessee, Paramount Theater and Stubb's Outdoor in Austin, Texas. Internationally, they've played in London, Paris, Berlin, Dublin and Glasgow. They both had an early introduction to music as children.
Andy's parents sang regularly around his childhood home, and he participated in multiple church and school choirs. Kyle's father often listened to Dallas radio station 92.5 KZPS, which sparked his love for music, and he started playing drums at 12-years-old. Based in Austin, Texas, Penny & Sparrow formed during their college years.
The former college roommates began covering songs together after Kyle learnt how to play the guitar. The pair then decided to begin writing music, which then progressed into live performances at college parties and fundraisers.
Inspired by an eclectic mix of influences, from Simon & Garfunkel to Slim Whitman, The Swell Season, Bon Iver, and even the compositions of Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, the pair craft a distinct sonic ecosystem that contains ethereal indie folk, raw balladry, tender chamber pop and experimental introspective storytelling, reminiscent of (but certainly not bound to)
the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Father John Misty and The Lumineers.
Pepe Deluxé’s story is as improbable as their music is unforgettable. Formed in the late 1990s by studio wizard James Spectrum, four-time Finnish DMC champion DJ Slow, and encyclopedic vinyl collector JA-Jazz, the band carved their own path with audacity and imagination. Their early work, including the breakout hit 'Before You Leave' made famous by Levi’s Twisted Jeans campaign, cemented their reputation for audacious, genre-defying music. Today, the duo operates as a cross-continental 'Dadaist research institute' for sound, with producer James Spectrum in Helsinki and composer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Malmström in New York, blending meticulous craftsmanship with fearless experimentation.
Eschewing the use of samples from their early work, their recordings feature rare and historic instruments such as a 40,000 BCE mammoth bone flute, Queen Victoria’s cherished Richardson’s Rock Harmonicon, a Wurlitzer once played by Frank Sinatra Jr., and even the piano from the Hindenburg airship. This adventurous spirit informs every note of 'The Ride 2', making it a cinematic, genre-defying anthem.
Critics have praised Pepe Deluxé’s work as “a radiant continuum. Soulful. Expansive. Enchanting,” and at other times as “a cosmic sonic cathedral that defies the ordinary and pushes the boundaries of perception.” Their music has reached hundreds of millions of listeners worldwide through films, video games, TV Shows (AppleTV’s Silo), and global advertising campaigns, influencing artists from The Prodigy to contemporary electronic acts.
